TEN SONGS: MADMOIZEL

© Achilleas Savvopoulos, Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports

For centuries, performance has always been part of any civilisation, bringing people together. I have selected ten pieces of music as performed on stage or television. A new way to rediscover these classics.

MADMOIZEL

1

LA CALLAS

Près des remparts de Séville / Carmen de Bizet
(Hamburg 1962)

Tragedy & grace.

Greek Diva, cantatrice and actress who changed the rules of lyricism. As beautiful as a Greek deity.

2

BAUHAUS

Stigmata Martyr
(The Old Vic Theatre, February 1982)

Plugging into the dark. Peter Murphy’s body inhabited by evil.

3

SIOUXSIE

Spellbound
(Live Rock Pop German TV 09/81)

Tribal New Wave in daylight. Feel the force!

4

GRACE JONES

Slave to the rhythm
(Wogan show 1985)

Neo cubism & Night-Clubbing.

Square cut, angular padded clothing, distinctive silhouette. Influencer of the cross dressing movement of the 1980s.

5

DIVINE

Love reaction
(Live at the Hacienda, Manchester, UK, 1983)

Crowd on stage & gay dancefloor. Divine!

6

LIZZY MERCIER DESCLOUX

Fire
(French TV, 1979)

A brilliant artist, with Serge Gainsbourg on the TV stage.

7

PROPAGANDA

Disziplin
(Live at The Tube 1984)

Nostalgia for a stunning TV programme. The stage, the lights, the audience, the video editing!

8

HERBIE HANCOCK

Rockit
(Grammy Awards 1984)

Robotization, break dance, synthetization & entertainment.

9

SERGIU CELIBIDACHE

Boléro de Ravel
(The Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, 1971)

16 minutes of a unique performance, Celibidache getting into a trance, unlike any other conductor. An absolutely stunning performance from the best conductor ever, beautifully filmed and focused on him only. He was the one and only able to play Le Boléro in around 16 minutes. Something Maurice Ravel himself would have loved to accomplish, but never succeeded in.

10

ALAN VEGA

Insulted by the audience
…come on guys!

Best reply ever of Alan Vega to the crowd. Punk’s not dead!
