PRESENTING: UTGANG
TONN Recordings is delighted to present new artists UTGANG, whose superb debut single ‘Exhale’ comes out this week on TONN Bandcamp.
Originating in France, Jean Pellaprat and Max Wyrd first met through the Post Punk Noise band, Princess Thailand. Whilst touring extensively during that early period of playing together, an idea soon formed to work more closely to develop an entirely new project that would allow them to go further musically and visually. So UTGANG was formed out of a strong desire to create their own artistic universe.
Wishing to still retain the acoustic elements of their performance, they embarked on developing UTGANG through a live set up with Max on guitars, Jean on drums and both contributing to vocals and synths.
From the outset, Jean and Max felt a strong urge to cross over into other artistic disciplines such as photography, fine art and contemporary dance. Driven by this desire to push their new project beyond the boundaries of musical circles, they have worked with Japanese contemporary art duo Ivre Flower for their first visual compositions and are currently collaborating on future multi-disciplinary projects.
In UTGANG, Jean and Max have allowed themselves the creative freedom to fully explore and compose what most inspires them. Through their work together, they have reached a balance between experimenting with new new elements, whilst also establishing signature sounds that have already become foundational to UTGANG.
After a period of residencies in Belgium to develop new material for UTGANG, they have returned to France to work with audio engineers at Question de Son Studio in Paris, where they have produced their TONN Recordings debut release, the brand new single ‘Exhale’.
Premiering on DJ Sharlese Metcalf’s excellent Mechanical Breakdown Radio Show on KEXP, ‘Exhale’ is an electronic force to be reckoned with. It brings the listener along with it, sweeping dynamically through a series of exhilarating crescendos, accompanied by perfectly poised vocals.
Later in the month on 8th September, a brand new video for ‘Exhale’, filmed by Belgium by artist Charles Bruère, will premiere on Takuya Terao’s highly respected music journal Cold Experiment. This new video, which was filmed on location in Brussels, skilfully collapses the gap between reality and digital.
TONN is excited to embark on this brand new journey with UTGANG. We cannot wait for what comes next.
